Each child is unique, born with a unique personality and unique potential. But it is much depending on us, parents, to help children develop that potential, to give them the right example and let them grow up into confident, respectful, kind adults. No parent is perfect, of course. And we all make mistakes from time to time. But some parenting mistakes can cause long-term problems that could affect children’s lives and behavior in the long term. Especially if those mistakes persist into repeating patterns. Here is a list of some common behavioral problems in children that could be the result of bad parenting practices.

1. Inability To Unwind

It is so typical for parents to tell their children to “behave”, “be more grown-up”. Let kids be kids. They need to do childish stuff, play and behave like kids. We need to allow them that privilege most of the time. As long as it is safe for them. Even if it is not always convenient for us, adults.

2. Anxiety

Children look up to their parents as role models and, especially at an early age, seek approval in them all the time. Too much criticism can cause serious harm to the vulnerable young mind. Such children grow up with a great amount of self-doubt potentially leading to anxiety issues in future. Appreciate your child and avoid harsh words or criticism.

3. Severe Trust Issues

Be sure to protect your children from harm and pain, but avoid passing your own fears and disappointments onto them. Try to save your “bad experiences” and “trust” issues for yourself. A reasonable adult advice is always welcome. Yet,  be mindful of what you say in front of your children. They soak up your every word and it might leave a mark.

4. Low Self-Esteem

If parents often tend to compare a child to his or her siblings or other children that they deem “better” in some aspect, such a child can grow up to have low self-esteem and inferiority complex. Encouragement, on the hand, can do wonders for your kid’s self-confidence.

5. Lack Of Self-Dependence

Again, it is normal and natural to want your children be safe. But trespassing a certain level of attachment and keeping your children too close, not allowing them to explore the world and learn, may turn them into immature and irresponsible adults.
