Printed Solar Panels
Great progress has been made in the printing of solar panels that promises to make energy available to millions of people in impoverished rural areas. Improvement in solar cell efficiency from 3% to 20% is making printed cells a viable option, and despite high upfront costs for the industrial printer, the cells themselves are inexpensive to produce in mass quantities.
The cost of solar power has declined dramatically over the past few decades, from $40 per watt in 1977 to $0.74 per watt in 2013. This trend is expected to accelerate as improvements in efficiency and new technologies come online.
